Another experiment is over

In Uncategorized on June 7, 2010 by PDADoc

I’m on my way to the airport to fly to Europe in a few hours or work and Im thinking about how nice it would be if someone made a device that met all of my needs.

I’m mentioning this because Ive just switched back to my iPhone 3GS from a BlackBerry Bold 9700. Luckily I was able to do it before the deadline at midnight last night so I didn’t lose my unlimited data plan.

Why did I switch back, you might ask? Well, that turns out to be a complicated answer, but here goes: while I loved the BlakBerry Bold 9000′s overall size and keyboard, the 9700 keyboard proved to be much too small for my liking. I’m not a big guy, but I do have large hands and using that tiny keyboard was cramping my style, no pun intended.

Also, I have gotten spoiled by the variety of apps that are available for the iPhone. One of the areas where the BB beats out the iPhone for me was that I could print any file or e-mail message to any Bluetooth or WiFi printer, something the iPhone can’t so as easily yet.

In the end, it was a tough decision and I really hate typing on the iPhone’s on-screen keyboard (as I’m doing right now), but this is what I mean by trade-offs. Who knows? I might come back to it after the BlackBerry slider is released, I’ll have to see.

Wow! Has it really been that long??

In Uncategorized on June 1, 2010 by PDADoc

When I first started doing this, I had promised myself that I would make a post at least once a week. Well, that hasn’t turned out so well.

It just brings into perspective [for me] just how much of a commitment one has to make to blogging for the process to work. By nature, I’m not a writer; to quote Dorothy Parker: “I hate writing but I love having written“.

Now that I have access to this blog from any mobile device I no longer have any excuses, I guess.

Snow Cleanup 2009

Well, the storm has passed, and left a LOT of snow in its wake!

They’ve been saying on the news here that this is the worst storm in the midwest in the last 40 years. For a few days, it seemed as though it would never stop snowing. The snow was bad enough, but combine that with below freezing temperatures, 30-40 mph winds, and you can imagine what it must have been like.

There was no way to go anywhere, because the highways were closed, literally closed, and the local roads were all but impassable.

We started the cleanup today, with my father-in law using his tractor with a loader mounted on the front, and he was able to bulldoze the snow out of the way.

His neighbor across the road also came over and he had a snow blower attached to his tractor, and man, it sure cleared a path! It was something to see, but the road is already covered again because of the wind.

Still, we cleared quite a path. Even Sue, my wife, was out shoveling. Because I’ve done it so many times before, I’m used to it, but she hasn’t, so she’s going to be plenty sore in the morning!

Now this is what I’m talking about!

In Uncategorized on December 14, 2009 by PDADoc

I’m sitting in one of my favorite places, the Bubble Lounge, enjoying a cold glass of Stella before my therapy session, and life is good.

I’m not really a downtown person; I’m much more comfortable in a sophisticated uptown cigar bar, but this place caters to professionals like me and my friends, and is quite sophisticated.

Got all my shopping done, the TV we got for Sue’s parents has been delivered to her brother, just have to wrap my gifts.

I’m looking forward to meeting up with my boys for a night of scotch and cigars and to exchange gifts before we leave for our respective holiday destinations. We need to plan a golf getaway early next year, that would be cool. The really great thing about our little group is none of us has children to complicate any plans. For me, that’s a welcome change!

Now, back to my beer!

Anniversary Day

In Uncategorized on December 12, 2009 by PDADoc

I was just sitting outside on the terrace, thinking about how nice a day it turned out to be. Sunny, clear, and not too cool. I don’t mind it but Sue (the wife) complains about how cold it is, ergo, no peace for me, LOL!

Today’s our anniversary, and I couldn’t help but think about how many years have gone by. We’ve been together for almost 20 years but it just doesn’t seem as though that much time has gone by. It seems rather odd when compared with the average lifespan of relationships these days, but I wouldn’t have traded any of those years for a winning lottery ticket; Sue is the best, and I wouldn’t trade her for anyone in the world.

Now off to get dinner!

Quiet Time

In Uncategorized on December 12, 2009 by PDADoc

Well, I managed to get some of my Christmas shopping done, make a couple of returns, and get my wife an anniversary gift.

In addition, I checked on my neighbor’s cats that I’m watching while she’s away.

So now it’s 5am, it’s 27 degrees outside, and I’m sitting in my den, cozy, safe and sound. It’s times like this that one truly feels blessed.

I’m staring out the window of my den, looking at the greatest skyline on the planet, feeling at peace; you can’t hear a sound anywhere, even if I step out onto the terrace.

It’s one of the main reasons I love the night, there’s a surreal calm to it all, especially in the late fall and early winter, my favorite seasons.

I’m going to bed but I thought I’d share this picture:

Really nice day, but where’s winter?

In Uncategorized on December 8, 2009 by PDADoc

I took this photo this morning while I was getting ready for work.

As a rule, I tend to step out onto the terrace to get some idea as to what the weather is going to be like, so I decided to snap this photo.

New Blogging Home

In Uncategorized on December 8, 2009 by PDADoc

Yesterday I decided to leave my old blogging service, due to the fact its feature set was lagging behind other services available. Not to mention that the customer support was terrible.

So now I’m on WordPress and I’m much happier! The one minor snag was that my old Blogging service didn’t have any tools in place for exporting my posts. So I had to manually copy and paste them all by hand; luckily there weren’t that many!

So now it’s done and my new blog has all the services I had been missing and then some!

Where do I even start?

In Uncategorized on September 12, 2009 by PDADoc

It’s been quite a while since my last post, I know, and quite a bit has happened since then.

My wife’s family was out to visit for ten days last month and I ended up driving my wife to a family reunion outside of Rochester, took just over six hours to get there, and the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, either. It was cool and rainy, and it even rained on us during the reunion for about an hour.

Got back home just in time to get back to work, oh goody. Then I bought a new laptop, transferred all of my files over to it only to have my external hard drive give out on me, the one with all of my iTunes files on it. I’m still trying to recover the data off the drive, and that’s occupied the majority of my free time, costing me many hours of refractory time and sleep, and I STILL don’t have the files restored yet.

I installed and ran a data recovery program that started at 3pm yesterday and completed at 6:30 this morning only to learn that it didn’t work at all!!! No sleep last night save for a two-hour nap yesterday. Paid $140 for another software program that’s running now and I’m hopeful that this one will work this time. I’ll finish this later; gotta sleep for a while.

Well, I played golf yesterday, and it’s great to be back on my regular schedule.

With all the rain we had over the past several weeks, I feel as though the golf season was skyrocketing by.

We played at a very nice country club out on Long Island; the fairways were immaculate and everything was extremely nice. It was the kind of club where the entire family could spend the day: dad on the golf course, mom playing tennis or at the spa, and the kids at the pool. And afterward, they would all meet up for dinner at one of the three restaurants there.

But you really have to have that ki nd of facility there, because from what I could see during our drive out there, there’s really nothing else.

I had an up and down game. As usual, I drove the ball well, hitting more fairways than anyone else: I even had a perfectly struck 275 yard bomb right down the middle. Where my game is weakest is the second shot after my drive, I just can’t manage to hit whatever iron I use consistently.

And while I’m getting better with my hybirds, I still struggle with shots on uneven lies.

Still much more work to do!
